Buckinghamshire's economy - February 2019

The latest research on Buckinghamshire's economy is in, giving us a greater understanding of how business, social and economic landscapes are changing over time.

Destination of school leavers

More than a quarter of Buckinghamshire’s school leavers go on to Russell Group universities after key stage 5. This is the highest proportion recorded in any of England’s 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) and more than double the national rate, nine percentage points above 2nd placed Hertfordshire.

Buckinghamshire also has the highest share of school leavers going onto Oxbridge (3.0 per cent) and to universities ranked among the top third of all higher education institutes.

Claimant count

Buckinghamshire’s claimant count rose by 315 in January to stand at 3,485, the biggest rise in any single month since February 2012. Over the last year, the claimant count has risen by 540, or 18.3 per cent, to reach the highest total since June 2014. At 1.1 per cent of working age residents, Buckinghamshire has the 3rd lowest claimant count rate among the 27 county council areas, ranking 2nd lowest among the 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs).

Buckinghamshire’s GVA per hour worked

Buckinghamshire’s productivity is the 4th highest among the 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), ranking 27th among the 168 NUTS3 regions in the UK and 5th highest outside London.  Buckinghamshire is one of only eight LEPs where productivity is above that of England’s and is one of only 48 NUTS3 regions to better UK productivity.
