In our July 5th edition, we told you about the rise in electric vehicles in Buckinghamshire (from 10 to 1,800 in six years).

We also told you about the government’s £4,500 Plug-in Car and Van grant, which when used in conjunction with a £2,500 Low Carbon Workspaces grant could take the cost of a £20,000 electric vehicle down to just £13,000.

Now there’s more…

In addition to this, the government is also running schemes to make it more affordable to install electric charge points at workplaces, in homes and on the street, including:

• The Workplace Charging Scheme, which is a voucher-based scheme that provides support towards the up-front costs of the purchase and installation of electric vehicle charge points for eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations
• The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme, which provides grant funding of up to 75% towards the cost of installing electric vehicle charge points at domestic properties across the UK
• The On-street Residential Chargepoint Scheme, which provides grant funding for local authorities towards the cost of installing on-street residential charge points for plug-in electric vehicles

There are also possible reductions on vehicle tax, corporation tax, fuel costs, and the London congestion charge for those with electric vehicles.

What’s more, the Transport Secretary Chris Grayling announced in July that new offices and homes may be required to come fitted with electric car charging points. He also announced that the government is considering the same requirement for new street lights in areas with on-street parking, as well as a ban on the sale of new conventional petrol and diesel cars by 2040.

What’s the upshot of all of this? It’s a good time to jump aboard the electric-powered bandwagon! The way things are going, pretty soon we’ll all be living in a fully electric world, so why not be among the first businesses to feel the benefits?
