Electric vehicles on the rise in Buckinghamshire

From 10 to 1,800 in six years, the increase in electric vehicles suggests the county is recognising the cost and environmental benefits.

Recently released statistics from the Department for Transport (DfT) have shone a light on the increase in electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles travelling along Buckinghamshire’s roads.

At the end of March 2018, there were 1,861 electric or plug-in hybrid cars*, LGVs (light goods vehicles/light vans) and quadricycles (micro cars) licensed for use in the county. This is up from 1,082 at the same point last year, and continues the rise in ‘green’ vehicles since 2012.

*Plug-in hybrid vehicles are those that have both an electric engine and petrol/diesel engine contained within the vehicle, meaning the car can be charged from a mains supply of electricity or at the petrol pump.

Which district has the most electric vehicles?

Wycombe district leads the way with 773 licensed vehicles, followed by Aylesbury Vale with 507, Chiltern with 310, and South Bucks with 271.

Meanwhile, both Aylesbury Vale and Wycombe have three electric charge points installed throughout the districts. Neighbouring Milton Keynes leads the way nationally with 67 electric charge points.

Thinking of going electric?

You too can have your ‘Bob Dylan Newport Folk Festival’ moment and go electric!

Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles can be anywhere up to 90% cheaper to run than conventional vehicles, but it's not just the savings after the fact that can benefit businesses and individuals.

Example: Take an eligible electric car on sale for £20,000. Deduct £4,500 via the government’s Plug-in Car and Van grant, and deduct another £2,500 via the Low Carbon Workspaces programme, and you have an electric car for £13,000.
