Innovators of all kinds have £millions of funding available to them

Innovate UK has £15m to invest in healthcare, food and life sciences & Horizon 2020 has €600m for digital health, energy efficiency & more.

Innovate UK funding

Businesses can apply for a share of £15 million for projects that support SMEs to develop innovations in health and life sciences.

Innovate UK has up to £15 million to invest in innovative business projects in agriculture, food and healthcare. Projects must involve a small or medium-sized business and focus on one of the following priority areas:

  • increasing yield, quality and sustainability in agriculture and food production
  • improving precision medicine, advanced therapies, pre-clinical technologies
  • advancing biosciences in healthcare and agriculture and food production

The food and drink sector represents 30% of the $20 trillion global economy and healthcare 10%. There is a £250 billion global market opportunity for improvements in agriculture.

This competition aims to stimulate innovation in health and life sciences under a number of themes:

  • increasing agricultural productivity
  • improving food quality and sustainability
  • precision medicine
  • advanced therapies
  • pre-clinical technologies
  • biosciences

The deadline for registrations for this competition is at noon on Wednesday 9 November 2016.

Horizon 2020 funding

Businesses can apply for European funds for a range of innovative projects from autonomous transport to energy efficiency and digital health.

The EU’s Horizon 2020 funding programme for businesses and researchers will invest more than €600 million across 7 new initiatives in a range of fields including smart transport, autonomous transport, factories of the future, digital health, the circular economy and energy efficient buildings.

Government underwrites European funding

The UK Government recently said that businesses and universities should continue to bid for EU funding while the UK remained a member of the EU and that it would underwrite payment of awards even when projects continued beyond UK membership.
