Generating electricity, generating savings

With the help of Net Zero Bucks, ERA is on the way to making significant reductions on what were their annual 800 tonnes of CO2e emissions.

European Raid Arrays (ERA) is a leading data management company based in Chesham, Buckinghamshire. A provider of high-performance data storage solutions, ERA’s commitment to innovation and sustainability has seen them at the forefront of adopting green technologies to minimise environmental impacts.

ERA joined the Net Zero Bucks programme to further explore opportunities for reducing their carbon footprint. Through a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment conducted by a Net Zero Adviser, ERA discovered that their operations generated over 800 tonnes of CO2e emissions annually. To put this into perspective, this is equivalent to the emissions from approximately 180 cars driven for a year, or the combined yearly energy usage of 100 households.

The carbon footprint analysis revealed several key areas where ERA could achieve significant emissions reductions. By examining their commuting patterns, business flights, and overall energy consumption, the Net Zero Adviser identified potential savings through various methods, with recommendations to encourage remote working to reduce commuting emissions, minimise business travel, and optimise energy usage within their facilities.

ERA already utilises free night-time cooling, which is a positive action contributing to their sustainability efforts, and their commitment to decarbonisation was evident as they expressed interest in further reducing their environmental impact, leading to a Net Zero Adviser conducting a site visit to identify additional opportunities for sustainability improvements.

During the visit, it was found that ERA could benefit from upgrading traditional lighting to energy-efficient LEDs. However, the most substantial savings were identified in the potential installation of solar panels and battery storage systems. These upgrades would support the provision of on-site renewable electricity generation, meeting the electricity demand of ERA's intensive data management services via their servers. The potential installation of solar panels and battery storage systems represents a major step towards achieving their net zero goals.

By participating in the Net Zero Bucks programme and implementing various decarbonisation methods, ERA have demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability and are on a promising path to significantly reduce their carbon footprint.

ERA's proactive approach sets a commendable example for other businesses in the industry, showing that sustainability is not just a goal, but a continuous journey.
