Located in central Aylesbury, H-trak have been a leader in providing mobile point-of-care systems and software solutions to the healthcare industry since 2002.
Understanding the growing importance of sustainability, H-trak joined the Net Zero Bucks programme. They recognised the programme's potential to not only reduce energy consumption and costs, but also to strengthen their position when tendering for new contracts. A win for H-trak, the environment, and their community.
Challenges, opportunities, and implementation
Before joining the programme, H-trak faced the challenge of controlling their own carbon emissions, particularly as they operate from a serviced office where energy sourcing was outside their control.
The Net Zero Bucks programme provided them with a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment and a bespoke net zero report, highlighting inefficiencies and offering a path toward reducing emissions.
Charlotte Ralph-Gledhill, Commercial Support Officer at H-trak, commented on how the programme had helped the business: “I cannot thank the Net Zero Adviser Team at Buckinghamshire Business First enough for all of their help! They have provided a huge amount of information and support regarding how we as a company could reduce our environmental impact, helping us to be more mindful and considerate in our decisions”.
Sparking wider change in pursuit of net zero
With their net zero report, H-trak had a clearer understanding of their emissions and identified specific areas for improvement. One significant finding was the non-renewable energy tariff in their building. To address this, H-trak encouraged the building owner to switch to a green energy tariff, a change that reduced their emissions along with four other businesses at the premises.
H-trak also recognised the value of implementing small, sustainable changes across their business. These included educating employees about green energy tariffs for home use, encouraging carpooling and public transport, and minimising the need for couriers by having staff bring equipment directly to events.
Additionally, H-trak now provide recycled notebooks, going paperless where possible, and utilising technologies such as QR codes to reduce paper use. These combined efforts contributed to a significant reduction in their overall carbon footprint.
Certified sustainable
Following their success with Net Zero Bucks, H-trak completed the NHS Evergreen assessment and achieved an Evergreen certification to align H-trak with the NHS’s net zero goals. These additional actions reinforce H-trak’s ongoing commitment to making positive environmental changes and adopting new practices beneficial to the environment, while putting themselves in a competitive position in their industry.
Charlotte explained: “The Net Zero Adviser Team have provided invaluable support, meaning that we could apply for the NHS Evergreen Assessment with accurate emissions figures and have a robust Carbon Reduction Plan that had laid the foundations for a net zero future - sooner rather than later!”
Planning + action = success
H-trak’s participation in the Net Zero Bucks programme demonstrates how thoughtful planning and collective action can lead to meaningful reductions in carbon emissions. By making several accessible yet impactful changes, H-trak has not only improved their environmental footprint but also enhanced stakeholder relations and future business opportunities.
Their efforts have also had broader, knock-on impacts, benefiting neighbouring businesses and fostering a culture of sustainability among their staff. H-trak’s story is a great example of how businesses can drive change that benefits the environment, the community, and the company’s success.
“We started with a very limited understanding of what we needed to do to work towards net zero,” said Charlotte, “and now we feel focused in our goals and milestones, clearly recorded via Climate Essentials with regular webinars to add to our knowledge and push forward improvements.”
