Challenge Works - Health and Social Care

Challenge Works is a programme of support for innovating businesses to create solutions to key societal challenges facing Buckinghamshire. Read more about the project here.

Health and Social Care during the pandemic

The Health and Social Care sector has constantly been under pressure, and even more so in the past few years. The pandemic was a huge shock to the NHS and care services.

Before COVID-19, around 85% of the ‘burden of disease’ in the UK was from long-term conditions rather than infectious diseases. This grows concern about the impact of this outbreak on the health care needs of those with longer-term conditions. A YouGov survey designed by the Resolution Foundation in the UK found that access to health services for people with pre-existing conditions was 20% lower during the peak COVID period.

What are the challenges for Health and Social Care?

  • How can we increase mental health support and awareness?
  • How can we increase awareness of healthy eating and healthy lifestyle choices?
  • How can we support unpaid and social carers?
  • How can we increase opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds?
  • How can we support vulnerable people to live independently?
  • How can we improve access to the healthcare system post-COVID?

How can we solve these challenges?

Spread over five weeks, a series of 'design sprints' will guide businesses through the process of creating new innovative products and services. Each session will last three hours.

Design Sprint Agenda

Session 1 – Discovery - Tuesday 11th January 2022

This will be an introduction to the course, where businesses will be able to explore the challenges raised and understand the issues. You will have the opportunity to get to know other businesses with similar interests and hear from two experts who will provide further insight into the challenge topic and articulate the types of solutions which could be created.

Session 2 – Ideation - Tuesday 18th January 2022

This stage is where you will learn about the challenge in greater depth and assess more detailed potential ideas. This will be undertaken through a series of activities helping you to identify the issues and the plans required to create a viable response, with the help of Buckinghamshire New University and its wider network. At the end of this stage, you will have the basis of the idea you would like to take forward.

Session 3 – Prototyping - Tuesday 25th January 2022

At this stage, you take your idea to the next step, where we assess the viability of your solution. We will provide you with the information you need to develop the strategies that work best for driving your project forward.

Session 4 – Storytelling - Tuesday 1st February 2022

An opportunity for you to share your solutions with the rest of the cohort, and tell the story of what you’ve achieved and how you solve the challenge. The group will place themselves in your customer's shoes and give you feedback for consideration.

Session 5 – Pitching - Tuesday 8th February 2022

An opportunity for you to pitch your solution to our panel. At this stage, you’ll be able to apply for grant funding to help bring the idea to life and launch your new product or service.
