The Public Services Act became UK legislation in 2013. The act requires that organisations who commission public service projects consider how they can also secure wider social, economic and environmental benefit from work undertaken.

In June 2018, central government announced it would go further and explicitly evaluate social value when awarding major contracts. UK Government departments are now expected to report on the social impact of all major contracts they commission.
