“A boost to the Aylesbury economy”

Aylesbury Library may be on the move under plans being considered by local authorities. It is hoped that a new location on the High Street will provide a boost to the economy.

The potential move, proposed by Aylesbury Vale District Council, Buckinghamshire County Council and Aylesbury Vale Advantage will see Aylesbury Library move from Walton Street to new accommodation at 66 High Street, the previous offices of AVDC.

As well as a new state-of-the-art library, other services and facilities available would include a Centre for Bucks Studies which will provide a range of advice and information about AVDC and BCC services, bringing district and county services together under one roof. This centre will have purpose built study areas, meeting spaces, a new cafe and space for voluntary organisations. The Visitor Information Centre may also move from its current spot near the King’s Head pub.

Aylesbury town centre has been undergoing a period of regeneration lead by AVDC, with the support of their partners. This saw the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre open in 2010, while in July 2013 the arrival of a new Waitrose, an 80 bedroom Travelodge and a 280 space public car park continues the momentum. A new education/entrepreneurial centre at the head of the canal is under discussion with Bucks New University and Aylesbury College, and if approval is given, Aylesbury will see its first university open in early 2015.

Councillor John Cartwright, Leader of AVDC, explained: “If we can achieve this move, it will be another part of the jigsaw in place for the town. We’re working hard behind the scenes on the plans for the bigger area but are very clear that retaining car parking on this particular spot is extremely important to visitors and businesses. But we also know that people want to see more quality shops and restaurants so we are looking for a scheme which can meet all these requirements. We hope that we’ll be able to share our joint ideas with the public in the summer.”
