Retail businesses will often feel vulnerable to economic and legislative decisions and the impact they have on them. They may also feel alone in their struggles. They need advocates who have their interests in mind.
So, as one advocate appreciative of another, we highly recommend membership of the British Independent Retailers Association (Bira). So much so, in fact, that we’ve secured a 10% discount for Buckinghamshire Business First members who join Bira.
How Bira looks out for independent retailers
Recently, Bira met with the Business Minister to discuss challenges on the high street and how best to support indie retailers. They are having ongoing discussions with the Treasury about the proposed reform of business rates. They are having discussions with the Law Commission to look at ways of changing the 1954 Landlord and Tenant Act – the main laws governing commercial leases - pushing to give tenants stronger security of tenure so that they can manage their businesses with more certainty.
In the last month alone, Bira have been vocal in raising concerns about the impact that WHSmith’s closures will have on the high street, bemoaning the recent loss of 143-year-old retail institution Beales, and in highlighting the impact that the government’s Budget will have on independent retailers.
They also like pointing out the good that’s happening too, recently sharing examples of how independent retailers are seeing savings and increased profits by following eco-friendly practices.
