Exporting advice on Mix96 with Mojo Hair and UKTI

To export or not to export? That should not be the question for business owners these days given the increasing ease of access to foreign markets and the dedicated support network available to help you sell your products and services to countries across the globe.

This Monday’s episode of the Buckinghamshire Business First show on Mix96 took a closer look at exporting thanks to a local business owner with a success story to tell and the UKTI Trade Adviser for the South East.

“Get up and have a go” says successful exporter

Paul Adrian is the CEO of Mojo Hair, a premium hair styling, grooming and care range for men. Paul found a distributor in the USA while on a trade trip to New York that he secured by winning a UKTI-run competition focused on innovative British design brands. Mojo Hair will also soon be on sale in Israel.

Paul is full of advice for those trying to increase their export output, or start in the first place. His advice includes:

  • Learn how to greet people in their language
  • Find a UKTI trade representative
  • Register as an exporter with HMRC
  • Secure your trademarks first
  • Get official approval if selling food items

One key benefit Paul sees to exporting is that if you export successfully and meet the right distributor, you can get paid in advance rather than waiting 90-plus days to have invoices paid.

Advice from the UKTI Trade Representative for the South East

Angus Murray is the contact at UKTI for Buckinghamshire businesses. He can help businesses develop export strategies and can set businesses up with distributors across the world.

Angus explained why he thinks Buckinghamshire’s businesses are going global like never before, chiefly because of the entrepreneurial vision and mindset in the county ensuring the likes of MediPlus and Stateside Skates have successfully exported.

Angus gave plenty of advice Echoing Paul’s comments, Angus strongly suggested looking for payment up front from any company you deal with.
