Aylesbury charity secures funding from innovative ‘Soup’ event
An Aylesbury charity that supports vulnerable women has benefitted from a £520 donation after the cause was chosen at a fundraising event.
Leading social care provider Buckinghamshire Care introduced Buckinghamshire Soup as a way of supporting fundraising for community projects. Businesses and residents from around the county were invited to attend the event where they decided which local project should receive the funds raised during the evening.
Those who attended the event, on Tuesday April 12 at Aylesbury Opportunities Centre were given a bowl of soup, a bread roll and a hot drink, all for a donation of £5. The shortlisted charities pitched to convince the audience to vote for their project and the audience were then asked to vote for the cause which they felt would most benefit from the money raised during the evening. After the vote, Aylesbury Vale Rape Crisis was awarded the fund pot. The donation will help the charity to fund an additional phone line for vulnerable women who need to access help and support.
Buckinghamshire Soup is a new approach to raising money for charities in the UK, though this approach to funding projects has been successful over the past decade in the United States.
The event was created by Buckinghamshire Care’s Back2Base project, which supports adults with learning disabilities, autism and mental health problems back into the workplace through a range of employment schemes.
Headway urges sports clubs to be concussion aware
An Aylesbury brain injury charity is asking local sports clubs to ‘be concussion aware’ as part of a new national campaign launched this month.
Headway Aylesbury Vale, which supports people affected by Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), is at the forefront of the Concussion Aware campaign during Action for Brain Injury Week, which takes place from 9-15 May.
The campaign gives sports clubs and academic institutions access to a range of materials, including a factsheet giving advice about concussion, posters to display both online and in changing rooms, and a digital stamp to demonstrate the club has adopted a responsible approach to concussion.
In the meantime, Headway is inviting sports clubs to register interest in supporting the campaign or fundraising for the charity during Action for Brain Injury Week.
Headway estimates that, in the Aylesbury Vale alone, there are 1,500 survivors of Acquired Brain Injury – a condition which can be caused by accident or illness.
The charity, based in purpose-built premises behind the Co-Op in Wedgewood Street, would be delighted if survivors and their families visited to see what is on offer to help their recovery pathway.
