Wondering where to advertise your vacancy? Read the myriad ways available to you

When a vacancy opens up in your business the first thing to think about is where to advertise the new position. Read on to discover the best places to advertise your vacancy.

Agencies

Advertising with agencies is one of the best ways to fill a vacancy, especially when you consider the footfall that passes through these agencies, particularly those situated on high streets. If your advert is featured in the window of one of these agencies, you’re really on to a winner.

Many agencies specialise in particular sectors of employment, so research which ones suit your business and sign up with them. At the same time, thousands of prospective employees are signed up with agencies at any one time just waiting for an ideal vacancy to pop up – it’s the perfect marriage.

Job sites

Perhaps the premier way to advertise a job in the 21st Century, sites like Monster and Reed have become synonymous with job-hunting, as well as the websites of high street agencies like Adecco and Blue Arrow. These sites allow jobseekers to be very specific about what they are looking for from a job, so you know that when you do get an application through one of these sites, the applicant should match what you are looking for.

Your company’s website

People who visit your company’s website may not just leave with one of your products or services; they may leave with a new job. A page dedicated to vacancies in your company is a great way to ensure that any traffic you get to your website is able to see that you are hiring. Also include an application form and guidelines if necessary.

Word of mouth

As with advertising a product, advertising a job can be most effective when you leave it to other people to spread your message for you. Existing staff can play their part by telling family and friends about a vacancy, and you might find that the most cost-effective way of advertising also produces the most effective results.

JobCentre Plus

Perhaps the most well-known place to go to find a job, jobseekers are constantly pouring over advertisements while waiting at the job centre, and are then presented with myriad job opportunities as they strive to get back into employment. It is free to post a vacancy with JobCentre Plus, and you could instantly gain access to a huge number of hopeful applicants.

Trade magazines

Trade magazines are a brilliant place to advertise a vacancy, simply because you know that you have reached an audience that is interested in your sector. For example, it is unlikely that anyone will be reading a trade magazine on insurance if they didn’t already have an interest in it, and if they are also looking for a job at the same time, you could fill your vacancy in no time.

National newspapers

Old-fashioned but effective, advertising a vacancy in a newspaper has a certain charm to it. Bigger is better if you want to catch the eye of the reader, and if you are concise and to the point it might make a job-seeker circle your advert with a pen. Of course, if you are a small, local company you may have more luck with...

Local newspapers

If you don’t have a large budget and only wish to advertise locally, the advertising columns of local newspapers are a god-send. For relatively low prices your advert will go out to the entire readership of the local region – a cost effective way of recruiting your next employee.

This week’s poll is on the hot topic of recruitment. Please take a moment to answer our question.
