Famous London furniture store picks local social enterprise

It was the perfect marriage when this year, Heal’s invited Wycombe based charity Out of the Dark to be part of its 2013 Heal’s Discovers range.

Heal’s has a long tradition of championing new young talent and high-quality manufacturing. Meanwhile, Out of the Dark is a social enterprise based in High Wycombe, that recycles, repurposes and revamps salvaged furniture as a means to train, educate and employ young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Out of the Dark will be sourcing iconic furniture that would have been sold by Heal’s in the fifties and sixties. The young people in the charity will be taught how to refurbish and repurpose these pieces using contemporary paint colours, fabrics and wallpapers, by their team of mentors. The items created will be sold as part of the Heal’s Discovers collection both in store and on line.

Jade Blades who set up the umbrella charity Street Dreams said,” We’re really excited to be working with Heal’s Discovers because a lot of the young people involved with Out of the Dark have barely left their neighbourhoods. So, for them to come up to London and see where their work has actually ended up – will be a huge boost to their confidence and self-esteem. It’s much easier to stay away from a life of crime if they start to see that it’s worth working because you get a good feeling from it.”
