Manufacturers and makers across the South East can now access fully funded expert advice, leadership support and up to £20,000 in match funding to help them adopt digital technologies and improve productivity through the Made Smarter South East programme.
Adopting the right digital technology can help manufacturing businesses work more efficiently, reduce costs and stay competitive — but knowing where to start is often the biggest challenge.
Made Smarter South East is a government‑backed programme designed to help small and medium‑sized manufacturers and makers take practical steps towards digital transformation. Delivered locally across the South East, the programme offers tailored, hands‑on support to help businesses identify, plan and adopt industrial digital technologies that make a real difference.
What support is available?
Businesses accepted onto the programme can receive a fully funded package of support, which may include:
- One‑to‑one guidance from a Digital Transformation Specialist
- A bespoke digital roadmap and action plan for your business
- Leadership and workforce development support
- Access to workshops and training to build digital skills
- Up to 50% match funding, capped at £20,000, towards the purchase of eligible hardware or software
The programme supports the adoption of technologies such as automation, data systems, artificial intelligence, robotics, additive manufacturing and digital connectivity — with recommendations tailored to each business rather than a one‑size‑fits‑all solution.
Who is eligible?
The Made Smarter South East programme is open to manufacturing and making SMEs that:
- Are based in the South East (including Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and surrounding areas)
- Have fewer than 250 employees
- Have a turnover below £44 million
- Are not part of a wider group or owned by private equity
- Have not exceeded state aid limits over the last three years
The programme is being delivered from April 2025 through to March 2027, giving eligible businesses a valuable window to access support and funding.
Why take part?
Businesses that engage with Made Smarter typically benefit from clearer digital planning, increased productivity, reduced downtime and a stronger foundation for growth. Crucially, the programme helps de‑risk investment by ensuring technology decisions are well‑informed and aligned with long‑term business goals.
