Benefit claimant count, September 2025

The monthly claimant count measures the number of people claiming unemployment-related benefits, providing an indicator of individuals who have been out of work for a long duration, as well as those on low incomes.

Why the claimant count matters to businesses

It is of interest to businesses as it provides a snapshot of the health of the local and national labour market.

A rising claimant count may indicate:

  • Economic slowdown or job losses
  • Growing long-term unemployment in the area
  • Potential availability of more candidates for recruitment
  • Pressure on wages due to increased competition for jobs

Conversely, a falling count might suggest:

  • A tightening labour market
  • Difficulty in recruiting talent
  • Potential upward pressure on wages

What are the latest claimant count figures in Buckinghamshire?

In September 2025, 10,975 Buckinghamshire residents were claiming benefits due to being out-of-work, or working below the Administrative Earnings Threshold (AET) (equivalent to 18 hours per week at the National Living Wage). This figure has dropped slightly from 11,025 in August 2025 and 11,065 in July 2025.

Hoever, this represented an increase of 435 on September 2024, with those aged 16-24 contributing to the majority of this change, up 325. This could suggest that young people leaving education and training are struggling to find or stay in work, and may be linked to pressures to recruiting younger and less experienced staff, due to the employment rights and challenging economic conditions.

September's figures equate to 3.2% of working-age residents, which is slightly higher than the regional average (3.1%), and below the national average (4.1%). Historically, Buckinghamshire's claimant rate has been lower than the regional average.

Within the county, the claimant rate is highest (and above the national average) in the Wycombe parliamentary constituency area.
