Horizon Europe - UK businesses urged to apply

UK businesses, academics and researchers are being encouraged to apply for funding from Horizon Europe, an EU research and innovation programme (the world's largest) which has a budget of over £82bn.

The programme runs until 2027 and is open to all types of R&I organisations, including large businesses, SMEs, academia, public institutions and third sector organisations.

What can be funded?

Horizon Europe is built around three main pillars

  1. excellent science (Pillar 1)
  2. global challenges and industrial competitiveness (Pillar 2)
  3. innovative Europe (Pillar 3)

Funding is available for:

  • Excellent research in any field
  • Researcher mobility
  • Research infrastructure
  • Innovation
  • Global challenges and industrial competitiveness including:
    • Health
    • Culture, creativity and inclusive society
    • Civil security for society
    • Digital, industry and space
    • Climate, energy and mobility
    • Food, bio-economy, natural resources, agriculture and environment
  • The development of the European research and innovation systems

What size grants are available?

The average Horizon grant from Pillars 2 and 3 is worth £450,000 to a UK business.

In addition to funding, collaboration with European and global partners through the programme can help unlock export markets for UK businesses.

UK entities can lead on projects and are already benefiting from Horizon funding to support their research.
