Iver Data Centre will provide new jobs and education initiatives for Bucks

Proposals for a hyperscale data centre within Iver will, if planning permission is granted, deliver new jobs and apprenticeships for Buckinghamshire residents through a Community Education and Employment programme.

Delivered by Greystoke Land, alongside Buckinghamshire Business First, the programme seeks to create 500 apprenticeships and 326 new work placements to support Buckinghamshire residents, in particular those from disadvantaged areas of the county, with new opportunities and skills.

Once operational, the new facility will provide in the region of 370 highly skilled jobs, and under the proposals, 30% of the workforce and 30% of the construction contracts will be taken on by Buckinghamshire residents and businesses.

More data has been produced in the past two years than in the entirety of history as artificial intelligence and the “Internet of Things” has increased the need for “cloud” storage. Iver Data Centre will provide the digital infrastructure required to handle this massive increase in data usage and Buckinghamshire is one of only three locations in Europe suitable to provide this sort of facility.

In addition to the education and job opportunities, Iver Data Centre will increase biodiversity and provide new space for residents with the creation of 45 acres of new parkland on a site that is currently inaccessible to the public and which was previously used as landfill.

Michael Garvey, Chairman of Buckinghamshire Business First, said:

“We are aware of at least 4,500 businesses in Buckinghamshire that could gain from these proposals, both during construction and once the facility is operational. The difference between these proposals and those we have seen before is that Greystoke Land is committed to working with Buckinghamshire Business First and Buckinghamshire Skills Hub to ensure that these benefits are derived by those who live within Buckinghamshire.

“We have the mechanisms in place to push these opportunities to relevant businesses and individuals within Buckinghamshire, as opposed to expecting residents to find them for themselves, and we are confident that we can support Greystoke to ensure that significant benefit is derived for the county.”

Speaking of the education and job opportunities Iver Data Centre could create, Anthony Crean of Greystoke Land said:

“Greystoke Land is incredibly excited by the prospect of bringing forward these proposals in Buckinghamshire, which provide a genuine and tangible opportunity to change the course of young people’s lives. We will work alongside Buckinghamshire Business First and the Council to promote these education and employment opportunities, focusing on those residents who need them most.

“Alongside the multitude of benefits Iver Data Centre can offer, I am personally most passionate about ensuring opportunities are provided for young people in Buckinghamshire. Given the nature of the data centre, we would be particularly excited about the prospect of promoting STEM subjects to the next generation.”

A planning application for Iver Data Centre has been submitted to Buckinghamshire Council and is due to be determined in August.
