Buckinghamshire's Business Population, 2025

Insights on the local business population provide a helpful indicator of overall business start-up and survival levels, and indicate which sectors and sizes of business are thriving or otherwise in the region.

In March 2025, the total business population of Buckinghamshire was approximately 30,535.

This represents a 2.1% decrease on the previous year, or a net decrease of 645 businesses, most of which was due to a decrease in the micro business population, falling 2.4% on last year. Nevertheless, Buckinghamshire maintains its status as having the highest concentration of micro businesses (<10 employees) of all enterprise regions in England, at 91%.

It should also be noted that this decrease in the number of businesses was significantly higher than the national and regional rates. The business population of England grew 0.35% in the year to March 2025, and the business population grew 0.14% in the South East. Therefore, Buckinghamshire’s high concentration of micro businesses may explain its decrease in business population relative to other areas with a lower micro business population.

There were gains in the population of larger businesses in Buckinghamshire, with a 1.2% growth in the number of medium sized businesses (50 to 249 employees).

By sector, there was a net decrease of 405 retail businesses in the year to March 2025, and a net decrease of 275 ‘office administrative and support activities’ businesses – these sectors contributed most to the net loss of 645 businesses in Buckinghamshire. However, there was a net gain of businesses in sectors such as electricity supply (+45 businesses), motor trades (+35) and film & TV production businesses (+30 businesses).
