One of the most inspiring things about living and working in Buckinghamshire is seeing our local business community continue to evolve.

Behind every high street, rural enterprise, office and studio is a story of people responding to change.
At Buckinghamshire Business First (BBF), we’re often asked what makes our business community so uniquely resilient, creative, and ambitious. Our economic strength isn’t an accident; it’s the result of thousands of local entrepreneurs, family firms, sole traders, and growth-minded companies who work together, support one another, and care deeply about the place they live and work.
A rising tide raises all ships. This ethos is in my mind as I recently had the immense privilege of being awarded an MBE for services to business. I am keen to say that this honour belongs to the whole BBF community - my colleagues, our board, our partners, and the thousands of businesses who place their trust in us and work together to help our region thrive.
Starting with purpose
This year marks 15 years since BBF was formed, in which time we have witnessed several emerging trends shaping the business landscape.
More people are choosing to start their own business, often rooted in personal passions for artisan foods, eco-focused activities or creative endeavours. Many of these businesses are deliberately community-minded and place-based, collaborating and sharing resources in ways that quietly but powerfully strengthen our economy.
Towns centred on local needs
Town centres are changing, with local businesses adapting in imaginative ways to offer experiences, workshops, markets, community events and services that bring people together. The truth is that thriving town centres today depend less on traditional retail and more on places that feel useful, sociable, and rooted in local identity.
Upskilling the future
Another noticeable shift is the growing focus on skills. Through apprenticeships, workplace training and partnerships with local education providers, local businesses are investing in their people. Young residents in particular are exploring a wider range of career paths from engineering and digital to creative and green technologies. This investment supports individual careers and ensures the county remains competitive and attractive for future generations.
Sustainable gains
Sustainability continues to move from aspiration to everyday practice. Local businesses are exploring ways to reduce waste, save energy, source responsibly, and design products with longevity in mind. What once felt like a trend now feels like a mindset shaping decisions in fields ranging from construction to hospitality.
The common thread shaping Buckinghamshire's future
A strong sense of community is the common thread running through our economy as it is continually shaped by thousands of residents who love their county. Their ideas, commitment, and ingenuity are what give Buckinghamshire its character - and its future.
