Businesses in Buckinghamshire

There were 34,175 VAT / PAYE registered businesses in Buckinghamshire in 2017. Of these, 77.2 per cent employed fewer than five people, the highest share of any county council or Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) area.

Over the last year, the number of VAT / PAYE registered businesses in Buckinghamshire has risen 3.3 per cent (1,105 businesses), failing to match the national rate of growth (4.0 per cent), ranking 6th among county council areas and 17th among the 38 LEPs.

New business registrations

There were 1,167 businesses registered in Buckinghamshire in the third quarter of 2017 (July to September), according to Companies House. There have been 5,087 new businesses registered in the last year, an increase of 94 or 1.9 per cent over the previous 12 months.

Jobs in Buckinghamshire

There were 242,000 people employed in Buckinghamshire in 2016, an increase of 9,000 over the previous year. At 3.0 per cent, Buckinghamshire has the 8th highest rate of increase among both England’s 27 county council areas and 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), well above the national (1.6 per cent) and regional (1.9) rates of growth.

Buckinghamshire’s exports

Buckinghamshire’s exports were worth £3.8bn in 2015, split evenly between goods and services.

At £16,296, Buckinghamshire ranked 8th among the 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships for value of export per job. Although Buckinghamshire’s goods exports were worth more than service exports and accordingly had a higher value per local job, Buckinghamshire ranked 5th among LEPs for service export value per job but only 23rd for goods export value per job.

Buckinghamshire’s claimant count

Buckinghamshire’s claimant count fell for a fourth successive month in September to stand at 2,910, the lowest level since January.

The number of out of work residents claiming either Job Seekers’ Allowance or Universal Credit now account for 0.9 per cent of Buckinghamshire’s working age residents, the 3rd lowest rate among the 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships, ranking 6th lowest among the 27 county council areas.  Over the last year Buckinghamshire’s claimant count has risen by 8.8 per cent, more than double the national and regional rises of 3.3 and 4.2 per cent respectively.

Unemployment in Buckinghamshire

Buckinghamshire’s unemployment rate fell to 2.5 per cent in the year ending June 2017, the lowest of any county council or Local Enterprise.  The number of unemployed Buckinghamshire residents now stands at 7,300.
