T Levels: how much do you know about them?

Employers can claim £1,000 per student (20 max.) that they host on a 45-day T Level industry placement. Locally, Bucks College Group is looking for businesses in sectors such as digital and science to host students.

If you’re not sure what a T Level industry placement is, you at least owe it to your business to read a quick summary, especially as the government offers a £1,000 payment for each student you host.

What are T Levels?

T Levels are a new technical programme for 16 to 19-year-olds that are the equivalent to three A Levels. A unique part of a T Level is the completion of a high-quality industry placement with an employer – of at least 315 hours, or approximately 45 days – where students will build the knowledge, skills and confidence they need in a workplace environment.

Help young people prepare for work

Local employers cite a lack of work-readiness among school leavers, a view outlined in the first-of-its-kind Buckinghamshire Local Skills Report.

By offering industry placements, employers can directly help to boost young people’s work-readiness, confidence and skills. This directly improves the local talent pool available to employers.

It’s a win-win for businesses and students!

Local students looking for digital and science-related placements

The Buckinghamshire College Group is reminding Buckinghamshire Business First members about the £1,000 incentive for providing students with an industry placement, and is asking businesses in certain specialties and sectors if they can step forward.

Currently, students studying for the following T Levels are in need of a business to offer them an industry placement:

  • Digital Production, Design and Development
  • Network Cabling
  • Laboratory Science

The students can be with you for a minimum of 45 days, which can be spread over several weeks or months. Students must start with your business before July 2022 and complete their 45-day placement by July 2023. Placements are delivered in the workplace and cannot be offered through remote-working.

What can the £1,000 pay for?

There are no restrictions on what the funds can pay for – employers may choose to use the money to:

  • enhance the placement experience for the student
  • buy equipment for students to use in the workplace
  • train staff on how to supervise and/or mentor placement students

This is an ideal opportunity for you to invest in your future workforce and provide great work experiences for young students.
