Buckinghamshire's economy - April 2019

The latest research on Buckinghamshire's economy is in, giving us a greater understanding of how business, social and economic landscapes are changing over time.

Educational attainment

Buckinghamshire’s residents have the highest educational attainment in the country, ranking first among county council areas and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), with 96.2 per cent of residents holding qualifications at NVQ level 1 or above.

Educational attainment is particularly high in Chiltern, where 63.2 per cent of working age residents hold degree level qualifications, the 8th highest share of all 380 local authority districts in Great Britain.

Company registrations

There were 1,468 businesses registered in Buckinghamshire in the first quarter of 2019, the highest quarterly total since we began collecting this data in Q1 2016.  This brings the total of the last year to 5,310, again the highest four quarter total on record.  Registrations in Buckinghamshire were 8.9 per cent higher in Q1 2019 than in Q1 2018 and rose 3.3 per cent compared to the last quarter of 2018.

House building

There were 2,000 new dwellings completed in Buckinghamshire in the year to the end of 2018. This was the highest four quarter total on record and well above the average over the last ten years (1,618). 

At the national level, completions rose 1.0 per cent compared to the previous year, reaching 164,870. If national house building matched Buckinghamshire’s rate, 217,747 new homes would have been built in the last year, rising to 379,677 if England had matched Aylesbury Vale’s rate.

Claimant count

Buckinghamshire’s claimant count increased for a fifth successive month in March to stand at 3,925, the highest level since April 2014. The claimant count has now risen by more than a third in the last six months.

Buckinghamshire has the 3rd lowest claimant count rate among the 26 county council areas, ranking 2nd among the 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs).
