Drivers and escorts are allocated a route on a permanent basis and meet with students and parents/carers prior to the start of the term so they can get to know them and work out how best to resolve any potential issues. This all helps with a smooth transition. At the same time, we ensure that our staff are comfortable with the time schedule, and that any client issues and staff training needs are catered for. In addition, the contract manager will speak to every parent/carer as a follow-up to the driver and escorts meeting. Additional drivers and escorts are employed during the early stages of a contract to ensure smooth running and that alterations can be made swiftly if necessary.

Alcom IT was formed by Buckinghamshire-based husband and wife duo Abe and Karma in 1998. From day one, their focus was building a team who could provide safe and secure IT services to small businesses. The team now offers a full suite of services from supply through to disposal.

  • Who checked the security updates were installed correctly? No one.
  • How did you know your antivirus was working properly? We didn’t.
  • Who was keeping an eye on active threats so you could avoid them? Nobody.
  • When was the last time your staff were trained on cyber threats? Never.
  • How do you know if staff accidentally install high risk software? We don’t.

When faced with these questions (and answers), it soon became clear how they had been compromised.

Beyond Touch

We have had an eventful year - as indeed I am sure all businesses have had too.

During the first lockdown, we took the swift decision to convert all of our face-to-face training sessions into online workshops. We have invested significantly in the technologies needed for this in terms of digital delivery platforms and new interactive hardware. It proved to be the right decision, as we are now seeing a significant uplift in new business.

In the last twelve months, we have supported over 70 businesses on the Be Your Own Boss programme run by Buckinghamshire Business First. It has been extremely rewarding to help people transition into a new life of becoming a business owner for the first time.

Our work with the Royal Academy of Engineering has led to over 30 postgraduates building better business models through their Entrepreneurship Programme. This has led to acquiring work soon with the Royal Society of Edinburgh to deliver a similar hands-on programme of training for their entrepreneurs. Our coaching and business mentoring services have helped over 20 businesses in Buckinghamshire to reflect and learn from one another on the Peer Networks Programme delivered by Buckinghamshire Business First.

Finally, our Project Management workshops have helped over 50 entrepreneurs from Bucks New University, and in Essex through the South East Business Boost growth programme, to manage projects and plan product management activities easily and effectively. This has led to some large project delivery activity for electric vehicle charge point development and ‘software as a service’ business models.

Personal Assistants have training that you would expect a traditional carer to have. The standard of care provided by each Personal Assistant is high, but more importantly the service is delivered with genuine empathy, thoughtfulness and humility to create confidence and give those concerned the knowledge and comfort that they can trust in the support/care to be provided.

They are able to support with more than traditional care agency services; some Personal Assistants have additional skills in counselling, hairdressing, medical appointments, housing, and anything that promotes the client with positive mental health. People can have a Personal Assistant for anything from an hour a week to all week.

After the year we have had, we know that there is a need for flexible, quality care, to be able to have support that enables clients to achieve what they want to. We work with Buckinghamshire Council, direct payments, brokers, Western Grove nurses, GPs, and Oxford Mental Health Teams (OMHT). Getting started with environmental sustainability: good for business, good for the planet?

Hazlemere Community Association

Hazlemere Community Association is the registered charity that owns and manages Hazlemere Community Centre. We are the largest in the area which includes its own off-street parking. Formed in 1974, the community fundraised to build the premises which opened on 15th October 1976.

We have two halls, two lounges, a games room and a large kitchen. Our main hall has a fully-functioning stage. We are home to seven badminton teams, a football team, two table tennis teams and a chess team, as well as dance groups (ages 3 to 93), Pilates, keep fit, Parkinson’s UK, Bucks Vision, National Trust, Brownies and the fabulous Hazlemere Players - our resident amateur dramatics group. There are specialist groups such as caged birds, sword fencing and modern sequence dancing. We also have several therapy groups for the Stroke Association, Alcoholics Anonymous, Busy Hands Busy Minds, and Lesley’s Legacy. Not forgetting using the site for blood donor sessions and as a polling station.

Hazlemere Community Cinema is also a new feature that has a key brand of ‘not on the high street’-style films, with heritage and seasonal films proving very successful in the first year. In addition to all of this, we host regular music events, themed nights, Bingo Nights, Quiz Nights, family days, BBQs, a Gin & Beer Festival, Burns Night Supper, Murder Mystery Dinner…the list is extensive!

Heart of Bucks is the community foundation for Buckinghamshire; a funding organisation that supports essential local charities and community groups.

Working in partnership with individuals, businesses and public sector organisations, Heart of Bucks delivers funding to hundreds of not-for-profit groups that are helping to improve the lives of people in Buckinghamshire. 

One of the strengths of Heart of Bucks is our unique understanding of the needs of Buckinghamshire. We work closely with philanthropists and businesses to understand the causes they care about, and through research and outreach work we can ensure that funding reaches those who need it most and can use it effectively. 

An array of different projects and organisations have received funding since Heart of Bucks awarded their first grant in 2000, from cancer support groups, befriending services and counselling sessions, to support for children with additional needs, rough sleepers or ex-offenders.

We have worked with individuals and families who do not want the hassle of setting up their own charity, as well as businesses with a passion for Corporate Social Responsibility. In 2020, we also established our Community Investor Fund which simplifies charitable giving for businesses by enabling them to join together to fund local projects.

As one of the largest non-statutory funders in the county, we are proud to have been able to react quickly to the COVID-19 pandemic in order to support organisations and local people struggling. During 2020/21, we distributed £1.5 million in funding, our biggest year to date.

We are part of a network of 46 community foundations across the UK, all committed to making a difference to local people’s lives.

Keeping positive during the pandemic

All of us at Take One TV hope that you are keeping well, staying safe and coping okay with these ongoing changes of government guidelines: it has been a pretty rough time. Our crew are mostly working remotely and ensuring all is well in our studio as needed, with social distancing of course, and washing our hands frequently.

The Building Performance Hub

The Building Performance Hub, based on London Road in High Wycombe, is a state-of-the-art facility that is dedicated to the training and education of the high performance construction industry.

The Hub, which was launched at the beginning of 2021, is an independent provider and hosts training courses, offers certification, and educates on the performance of buildings. The aim of The Building Performance Hub is to educate and improve the industry, specifically using hands-on experience where possible.

The Hub contains a full-size timber frame house, which encompasses a 12-person classroom, and a sound transmission suite all within our 10,000sq ft warehouse. The Hub is also home to the ATTMA and SITMA certification schemes. As air and sound specialists ourselves, we run courses for new air and sound engineers to start their journey as testers and become a member of our certification schemes. For other training courses, we bring in industry professionals to teach in our space, such as fire protection and prevention, first aid, health and safety, fire doors and much more. We also offer various CPDs relating to building performance.

Everyone has a box of dreams for their business, their business life and their life outside of business. But the thing is, we keep putting the lid back as the busyness of business gets in the way. And over time, we lose connection and passion for the business and feel something’s missing because we’ve not only closed the lid on our box of dreams but kicked it into the corner.

What we’re left with is a niggle that some days is bigger than others, a knowing that things could be different, and we have far less satisfaction in our daily lives.
